ECOWAS AND CANADA STRENGTHEN THEIR COOPERATION

The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Director-General
for West and Central Africa, Mr. Ken Neufeld conducted on 16 October, a working visit to the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja.

During this visit, the Canadian diplomat was received by ECOWAS Vice-President, H.E. Dr. Toga G. McIntosh with whom he reviewed the various ongoing projects and explore new areas of cooperation including the fight against maritime piracy, terrorism, drug
trafficking and the Ebola virus.

Vice-President of the ECOWAS expressed the wish to see Canada help fund
elections supervision in several Member States in 2015. These include Nigeria,
Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, Burkina Faso and Guinea.

In his response, Mr. Neufeld stressed the quality of cooperation relations between his country and ECOWAS before expressing his appreciation for the work done by the
West African regional organization in the areas of regional security, integration and regional economic development.

During this meeting, ECOWAS and Canada have agreed to strengthen their cooperation in strategic areas of regional security, trade, economic, investment, capacity building and humanitarian actions.
