THE EUROPEAN UNION GRANTS EURO 63.8 MILLION TO ECOWAS TRANSPORTS FACILITATION PROGRAMME

 

Within the implementation of transports facilitation program, the European Union (EU) has granted Euro 63.8 million to the ECOWAS and UEMOA under the 9th European Development Funds.
This grant will enables construction of three control joint border posts. Two of them will be constructed under the ECOWAS responsibility. They will be one on the corridor Abidjan-Lagos at Nigeria and Benin border (Seme-Krake) and the other at Togo and Ghana border (Noepe). The third post will be constructed under the responsibility of the UEMOA at Benin and Niger border (Malanville).

Construction of these joint posts constitutes an important stage to reach the objective of facilitation of movement of people, goods and services at the borders. It will allow achieving two objectives; easy crossing borders with less formalities and also putting in place conditions to totally eliminate borders between member States of the ECOWAS.
The ECOWAS Commission in Abuja has held the official contracts signing ceremony. The President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. James Victor GBEHO; Representative of the European Delegation to Nigeria, M. Kazimierz Romanski and Representatives of four recipient member States (Nigeria, Benin, Ghana and Togo) also attended the signing ceremony.
